Overview

As expected, Channel 11's Christmas Day broadcast of a hunk of burning wood won its time period in the New York ratings for the fourth year in a row. The yule log drew an average of 275,000 viewers from 8 to noon, 20,000 more than second-place Channel 4 (whose lineup included the second hour of the ''Today'' show and ''Christmas at the National Cathedral''). But turning the TV into an ersatz fireplace and holiday jukebox is not a phenomenon limited to New York. Channel 11's log played on 12 other Tribune-owned stations, from Albany to San Diego, and nationally on WGN's cable superchannel, to an estimated total audience of 785,500. (Some stations showed shorter versions, and most broadcast it earlier in the morning.) New Yorkers weren't even the most faithful viewers: the log drew 9 percent of the audience in St. Louis and 6 percent in Atlanta, compared with 5 percent in New York.
