Description
Shotaro and Minako are arguing. Minako has confessed her infidelity to her husband and informs him of her intention to leave him. She has ceased to enjoy living with a submissive husband. Minako, who works for a construction company, loves her job and is progressing in her successful career, while her husband eagerly takes care of the house and the kids. He buys groceries, he cooks, he does the laundry – constantly. The couple’s arguing intensifies until Minaka files for divorce. Their older daughter Mari isn’t that upset by her parent’s problems as she’s more interested in the piano piece she’s got to play with her mother at a concert organised by her music school; admittedly, she’s also rather interested in her music teacher. But her younger brother Toru feels betrayed by his mother and can’t manage to reconcile himself to his father’s role as a housewife. A partial reconciliation occurs at Minako and Mari’s concert, where their entrance on stage is met with loud applause.

G-quadruplexes (GQs) are four-stranded noncanonical DNA and RNA architectures that can be formed by guanine-rich sequences. The stability of GQs increases with the number of G-quartets, and three G-quartets generally form stable GQs. However, the stability of two-quartet GQs is an open issue. To understand the intrinsic stability of two-quartet GQ stems, we have carried out a series of unbiased molecular dynamics (MD) simulations (505 μs in total) of two- and four-quartet DNA and RNA GQs, with attention paid mainly to parallel-stranded arrangements. We used AMBER DNA parmOL15 and RNA parmOL3 force fields and tested different ion and water models. Two-quartet parallel-stranded DNA GQs unfolded in all the simulations, while the equivalent RNA GQ was stable in most of the simulations. GQs composed of two stacked units of two-quartet GQs were stable for both DNA and RNA. The simulations suggest that a minimum of three quartets are needed to form an intrinsically stable all-anti parallel-stranded DNA GQ. Parallel.

Trapping electrons in quantum dots and controlling their quantum states is crucial for converting semiconductor structures into bits of quantum information processing. Here, we study single- and two-particle states in electrostatically induced quantum dots in gapped bilayer graphene (BLG), where the electron's valley states appear in a pair with their spin quantum number. Moreover, the features of BLG's electronic structure, such as the three minivalleys around each valley, and the corresponding orbital magnetic moment, modify the characteristics of the dot states. In the weakly gapped case, the single-particle level scheme is that of an almost quadratic band. For a sufficiently strong gap, an additional threefold ``minivalley degeneracy'' emerges. Based on these single-particle states, we analyze the orbital, spin, and valley states of two interacting electrons in the dot. We find spin and valley singlets and triplet states depending on the BLG and dot parameters, as well as two-particle interaction strength.
